HAPPENING NOW
WT Flood Tracker
Fifty sites in the USGS streamflow monitoring network remain in active flood mode in the USA Tuesday afternoon, fallout from Tropical Storm Debby. Ten of the monitored floodings continue to complicate the delivery of safe drinking water in south Georgia.
The Ogeechee River reached major flood stage, running close to 18 ft deep near Eden, GA on the morning of Saturday August 10. The channel overflows at 11 ft in this location, this event delivering seven feet of dirty flood water at tens of thousands of cubic feet per second, rushing to inundate the lowest elevations first. Ogeechee has been receding steadily since, still running more than three feet over the channel. As residents of Chatham County wait for floodwater to recede, public and private water wells must be considered contaminated and the water treated accordingly, boil water orders are in effect for Chatham County.
Water must fully recede from around a flooded well head before the area, casings and the groundwater in the well can be sanitized. Advice for decontamination of private wells here.

California: The new bluegreen bloom report was expected Friday afternoon ahead of the weekend, not yet available as of this update Tuesday. WTCAL reached out to Sarah Ryan with the Big Valley Pomo EPA for an update on Clear Lake, more to follow.
Last week's Recent Bloom report dated August 2 featured seven water bodies with DANGER level advisories, including Lago Los Osos, Lake Chabot, Lake Anza, Discovery Bay, Contra Loma Reservoir, Big Break Regional Shoreline and Copsey Creek. Three water bodies have been posted with HAB Warning level advisories over the last week, including Discovery Bay, Tahoe Keys and San Luis Reservoir's Dinosaur Point Boat Launch. Caution advisories have been activated for another 31 sites. See the California HAB tracker report with advisories by watershed region, HAB DANGER and WARNING advisories are pinned to the map with bluegreen tags, the full list is here.
New York
The number of active HABs confirmed in NYS dropped by forty overnight as reports made prior to July 30 have been moved to the 2024 HAB archives. By afternoon, 173 HABs are confirmed, down from 235 on the weekend. HABs reappearing for a second wave in the Lake in Central Park, Turtle Pond, Honeoye Lake with first HABs of the year for Oakdale Lake and Cortlandt Lake.
Impacted water bodies are listed here.
The latest satellite image of transborder Lake Champlain was snapped August 12, completely cloud obscured. The previous image captured Aug 11 showed a sliver of the Baie Missisquoi HAB with high concentration in the league of 800 to 900 thousand cells per 100 ml. The August 10 image is completely clear, we see here the Baie Missisquoi HAB filling the northeast water and the channel south into the west channel past North Hero Island at a consistent concentration 900 thousand to 1 million cells per 100 ml. A clear image of August 7 showed a hot spot of extreme high concentration at the northeast shoreline, another at the center of the bluegreen bloom down the lake near Alburg Springs, up to 3 million cells per 100 ml on that day, no longer so high in concentration. The widespread HAB in St. Albans Bay appears to have shrunk down to a large localized HAB on the west side at low concentration, less than 100 thousand cells per 100 ml. Lake Carmi in Vermont lakewide HAB concentration is up, 1 to 2 million cells per 100 ml. The latest satellite images of Lake Champlain from the NCCOS are here.
Lake Erie west basin: Ohio, Michigan
The latest image from NCCOS was captured August 12 at a high surface wind speed 13 mph, a clear view of the Lake Erie HAB with Maumee Bay State Park hot spot increasing in concentration and extent, now wrapping around Cedar Point National Wildlife Refuge 3 million cells per 100 ml on both sides of Cedar Point. North Maumee Bay has hot spots up to 2 million cells concentration. Get a look at the Lake Erie HAB here.
Louisiana: The latest upload from the NCCOS was captured August 12 at moderate wind speed 5.3 mph. Lac des Allemands continues to increase in concentration, the west bay joining the center and southeast hot spots at 3 million cells per 100 ml or more. Check out the latest satellite image from NCCOS here.
Georgia:
Georgia's Jekyll Island and St. Simons Island beaches were still in a green light condition as of yesterday, the bacteria advisory postings are not available today. Given the extensive flooding over the last week, consider the coastal beaches likely have elevated bacteria levels, more to follow.
