Water levels above the seasonal average
Data from the California Department of Water Resources shows stored water levels above the New Year's Day historic average. As of midnight last night, these are the calculations for two of California's 24 reservoirs:
- Lake Shasta Reservoir - impounding the Sacramento River in Shasta County for flood control, power generation and irrigation, currently filled to 77% capacity, 30% above the historic average
- Oroville Reservoir - the highest dam in the USA, 235 ft earthen dam impounding the Feather River in Butte County, serves as drinking water supply, power generation and flood control. The second largest reservoir in California, currently stocked to 68% of capacity, 26 % above historic average volume.
Streamflow Situation from the network of USGS river flow gauges in California
Streamflows remain largely above the 90th percentile through the North Coast Region 1 watershed Thursday, four stations have jumped to the front page map for hitting the 99th percentile flow rate, refer to the blue tags for flow details as of the time noted. The south interior remains in drought mode, extreme drought clings on in southeast Inyo County of the Lahontan watershed, the adjacent area of Inyo rated below normal. Into the Colorado River watershed, San Bernardino, Riverside and Imperial Counties continue below normal.
Mist and dense fog this hour over the Central Valley watershed Region 5, 45 degrees heading for a high 56 under sunny skies. Mostly sunny high 61 degrees for San Francisco, currently recording a temp of 51 degrees. It's 67 now in Los Angeles, sunny with a high 78. An air quality alert continues for Los Angeles area. The South Coast AQMD has extended a mandatory wood-burning ban for residents in the South Coast Air Basin. The No-Burn rule bans burning wood, pellets, and manufactured fire logs in any indoor or outdoor wood-burning device. Homes that rely on wood as a sole source of heat, low-income households and those without natural gas service are exempt from the requirement. Check for more information on the No Burn rule, here.
San Diego is 63 degrees under clear sunny skies today, after a Dense Fog Advisory New Year's Day. Looking for a high of 70 today, some patchy fog will roll back in overnight.
