Australian Navy vessel reports an accidental spill of oil off Seal Beach

Hazardous Spill File as reported to California Office of Emergency Services
An Australian Navy Vessel reported a release of an unknown amount of hydraulic oil near Seal Beach in Anaheim Bay yesterday following an incident of equipment failure. Seal Beach is located in the jurisdiction of Orange County.

Hazardous materials spills into the waters of the US are reported to California's Office of Emergency Services. Whether accidental or intentional, the spills are investigated with the potential for charges under a number of environmental protection regulations including the Clean Water Act, Harbors Act, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act and/or state legislation. When accidental spills are covered up, criminal charges can follow, not only for the party in control of the spill, but for the company executives responsible for the operation, for supervisors issuing orders to staff and for staff following orders to cover up such spills.

EPA Special Agents investigate the most significant and egregious violations of environmental laws which pose significant threats to human health and the environment.
